ABOUT JASON HUGHES
Rep. Jason Hughes is a lifelong New Orleanian, proven state legislator, and dedicated public servant with a track record of delivering results for District E through principled leadership, coalition building, and a deep commitment to education, economic opportunity, and community safety.
A proud native of New Orleans and graduate of our public school system, Jason Hughes is the definition of a servant leader. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with honors, from the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Southern University and A&M College.
Jason’s passion for public service began early, leading him to serve in senior positions for Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, and New Orleans Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu. He also served as a senior advisor and cabinet member to two higher education system presidents, helping expand opportunities for students across Louisiana.
In 2019, Jason was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. He quickly earned a reputation for principled leadership, hard work, and delivering for his constituents - securing resources for economic development, improving public safety, supporting survivors of violence, and strengthening our public schools.
Beyond his official roles, Jason is a faithful member of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, a Life Member of the McDonogh #35 Senior High School Alumni Association and the Southern University Alumni Federation, and an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He serves on numerous boards and actively researches and publishes on urban education, global Black populations, HBCUs, and comparative international education.

Computer Science Education Act (HB264 known as Act 211 (2024))
- Requires high school computer science course and teacher training. This ensures students graduate with tech skills needed in today’s workforce.
Steve Carter Literacy Expansion Act (HB649 known as Act 649 (2024))
- Expands literacy program to include math services. Helps improve student performance in foundational subjects.
Geometry for Career Majors Act (HB207 known as Act 447 (2022))
- Adds geometry as a required course for career-track students. Ensures students have critical math skills.
Early Literacy Improvement Act (HB911 known as Act 520 (2022))
- Improves early reading programs in elementary schools. Focuses on helping kids read by third grade.
Student Transcript Access (Act HB183 (2022))
- Would have prohibited withholding transcripts due to unpaid student debt. Aimed to prevent financial barriers to education and jobs.
Student Discipline Reform Act (HB411 known as Act 473 (2021))
- Standardizes student discipline rules. Promotes fairness and transparency in school discipline.
Higher Education Gender Equity Resolution (HCR20 (2021))
- Urges gender balance on public college boards. Seeks to ensure women are represented in higher ed leadership.

- Requests plan to place literacy coaches in low-performing elementary schools. Supports reading success.

- Grants immunity for reporting overdoses. Encourages life-saving action during crises.

- Requires hospitals to offer emergency contraception to sexual assault survivors. Supports victim care.
Child Care Facility Safety Act (HB461 known as Act 31 (2021))
- Strengthens rules for licensed care centers. Protects children in out-of-home settings.

- Removes deadline to sue for child sexual abuse. Supports survivors seeking justice.

- Requested a study of pandemic effects on public employees. Helps guide future workforce policy.

- Lets DCFS access birth/death records for investigations. Helps protect vulnerable children.
